US Congressman. He was a successful landowner when elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses, serving 1841 to 1845. A supporter of the Confederacy, he was a member of the North Carolina Secession Convention and served as a member of the First Confederate Congress in 1861. In 1866, he was a delegate to the Union National Convention at Philadelphia, chairman of the court of common pleas in 1867 and commissioner for Nash County, North Carolina in 1868. After leaving politics, he engaged in the management of his estate until his death
