B.F. Hungerford, son of Jabez (1793-1838) and Elizabeth Jane (Weston, 1799-1842) Hungerford, was educated in classical studies in New York and at age 19 became a lawyer. When he was 21. he was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction for the western division of the state of New York. He moved to Owen County, Kentucky in search of a warmer climate and was president of New Liberty Female College. In 1853 he married Rose Ann Allnutt of Owen County. Six years later they moved to Shelbyville, Kentucky, where Benjamin Hungerford served as president of Shelbyville Female College. He was ordained by Shelbyville Baptist Church in 1861 and answered the call to pastor Little Mount Baptist Church the following year. He served as pastor there and at other churches in the area until, in 1887, he retired from Little Mount Baptist Church.
