Civil War Union Brigadier General. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized the 13th Kentucky Infantry and was commissioned Colonel in command. He commanded his regiment at the Battle of Shiloh, the Siege of Corinth and at Perryville. For his success in the field, President Abraham Lincoln promoted him Brigadier General in charge of Union troops in Kentucky. In July 1863, he led three brigades at the Battle of Buffington island, inflicted a severe defeat and captured most of Confederate General John Morgan's men. At Cynthiana, Kentucky, in June 1864, Hobson and 300 men of the 171st Ohio Infantry were captured by Confederate General Morgan, he was able to negotiate a prisoner exchange and was released. He commanded a brigade of Kentucky Cavalry at the Battle of Saltville in October, 1864 and was mustered out of the service in August 1865. After the war, he engaged in business and became president of the Southern Division of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, in 1887.
