McClellan

Civil War Confederate Army Officer, Author, Educator. He was a graduate of Williams College where he studied with the intention of entering the ministry. However, pre-war he was involved in education which subsequently became his life long vocation. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Virginia Cavalry. He was later commissioned and served as adjutant of the 3rd Virginia. In April 1863 he was appointed Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General J.E.B. Stuart, and rose to the rank of Major while serving in this staff position. Two days after the death of General Stuart, Henry McClellan was assigned to the staff of General Robert E. Lee, where he served for three months. He then served on the staff of General Wade Hampton as Adjutant General and Chief of Staff. In 1870 he moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he opened and operated the Sayre Female Institute. He left a memoir, which was published as "I Rode With Jeb Stuart", a classic account of the cavalry corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was a first cousin of Major General George B. McClellan of the Union army.
