Isaac VanMeter was born on February 2, 1759 in Frederick County, Virginia. His father was Jacob Jansen "Jake" VanMeter, Sr., who was born on March 1722/1723 in Salem or Somerset County, New Jersey. He died on November 16, 1798 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was buried there in the Samuel Haycraft Cemetery in Elizabethtown.

His mother was Letitia "Lettie" Stroud, the daughter of Edward Stroud, II and Eleanor (?) Stroud. Letitia was born on August 19, 1725 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died in 1799 and was buried with her husband in the Samuel Haycraft Cemetery in Elizabethtown.

Isaac Vanmeter (Van Meter) served in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in 1778, serving as a Private under Capt. Harrod. In 1780 he served for 6 weeks under Capt. Swan. In 1782 he served for 6 weeks under Capt. Vertrees.

Isaac Vanmeter was the husband of Martha Hubbard. They were married on July 29, 1783 in Lincoln County, Virginia which became Kentucky in 1792
