Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer and an officer in the Kentucky State Militia. He recruited the 25th Kentucky Volunteers in 1861 and was commissioned Colonel in command of the 8th Kentucky Cavalry in March, 1862. In March, 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General in the Cavalry Corps and commanded the 1st Brigade, Army of the Ohio which pursued Confederate General Morgan in his Ohio raid. He also commanded a cavalry division at Cumberland Gap and commanded the Cavalry Corps at Knoxville, resigning January 1864. After the war, he resumed legal practice and served as a judge
