DEATH'S DOINGS
At 7 o'clock yesterday morning, after several months' illness of Bright's disease and inflammation of the bowels, MR. JOHN BAUGHMAN passed quietly to rest in the 78th year of his age, surrounded by his wife and children, whom he loved so well and for whom he did so much. Mr. Baughman was the son of Henry Baughman, the sole survivor of the family who came from Virginia and settled near Crab Orchard, when this county was a wilderness inhabited by Indians. These savages attacked and massacred the family one day, Henry alone escaping and saving his life by hiding in the bushes. A number of sons were born to him, all of whom turned out to be thrifty business men, the subject of this sketch especially. More than 50 years ago he was married to Mrs. Catherine Smith, who survives him, together with three children, Samuel H., John K. and M.S., his oldest son, Henry, having died in July last. During his long life by industry and frugality, he amassed a large fortune, of which he has had the pleasure of distributing among his children more than $100,000. He still has $60,000 in bank stock and good notes, besides other property, notwithstanding he lost more than $50,000 worth of negroes by emancipation. This would make an estate worth considerably over $200,000, the most of which was made in farming, stock raising and money loaning. He never speculated, being content with the slower but surer methods of making a fortune.
