John was born on 6 September 1833 in Edgefield, South Carolina, the son of Col. Whitfield Butler Brooks. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Mary Goodwyn Adams on 24 January 1856. His second marriage was to Jane Margaret Adams on 30 December 1868. John died on 14 November 1911 in Columbia, South Carolina.
