Barren County, Kentucky

Joe Nuckols raised and organized Company A of the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry of the famous Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade, CSA, during the War Between the States. He served as acting Major of the regiment at the battle of Shiloh in April 1862, and was later promoted to Major and Lt.-Colonel. He was promoted to Colonel in February 1863, and commanded the regiment until that fall. Nuckols was wounded at Shiloh, and severely wounded in the arm at Chickamauga, which wound disabled him from further active service. After the war he served as county court clerk and in the state legislature, and as Adjutant General of the Kentucky State Guard. Some sources say his middle name was Pouncey.
