US Congressman. Born and raised in Maysville, Kentucky he was appointed to the bar after graduating from Augusta College in 1841. He served in the state senate from 1853 to 1856. A staunch Unionist he twice ran for and won a seat in Congress serving from 1861 to 1865. In addition to serving in Congress during the Civil War he also served as a colonel for Union forces seeing action at the Battle of Ivy Mountain. In 1869 he was appointed by President U.S. Grant a Commissioner to Mexico. He returned to Congress when he his fellow Kentuckians elected him to serve in the Forty-ninth Congress from 1885 to 1887. He did not seek reelection and returned to his law practice in Maysville where he remained active in community affairs until his death
