William was the son of Edward Mountjoy and Sarah Chapman. He married Mary Fisher in Fauquier County, Virginia, on April 19, 1796. They were the parents of 10 children, Edward, Robert Fisher, William, Susan, George W., Leroy Jefferson, Harriet, Thomas, Sarah, and Wiley.
Three of their sons, George, Thomas and Wiley, married three Stout sisters, Frances, Sarah and Harriet.
William and his wife, Mary, were originally interred on their family farm in Alton, but were reinterred in Alton Cemetery in 1971.
