GIBBS, Dr. Salatheal Cole, 96, R. #3 Lawrenceburg, died 10:10 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans Hospital, Lexington after a long illness. Son of the late J. C. and Mary Mundy Gibbs, Anderson County's last Spanish American War Veteran and believed to be the last State veteran and also the last of many local physicians who began their career in horse and buggy days, Dr. Gibbs was born in Camden (now Glensboro) in Anderson County, Kentucky on October 6, 1874. He was one of thirteen children, all deceased.
He was descended from a long line of military men. His father, also a country doctor, served in the Civil war. His grandfather, James Lawrence Gibbs, was in the war of 1812, while his great grandfather, Julius Gibbs, served under Patrick Henry in the Revolutionary War. A great great uncle, Col. Churchill Gibbs, distinguished himself in the American Revolution, serving under Command of General George Washington. An early ancestor, Lieut. John Gibbs, came from England to Jamestown, Virginia on the ship "Supply."
Beginning his education in a one room country school Salatheal Gibbs attended Shelbyville Normal School and the University of Kentucky from which he received a teacher's certificate in 1894.
After teaching for a short time he enlisted in the United States Army, serving throughout the Spanish-American conflict and for a year thereafter.
He was graduated from Hospital College Medical school, Louisville in 1907 and began his practice at Fox Creek in Anderson County. Three years later he opened his office in Glensboro, (R. #3 Lawrenceburg) where he lived the remainder of his life.
For eight years he was physician for the county's Home for the Aged and was for many years a member of the Anderson County Health Board. He was a member of Anderson Lodge No. 90 and an honorary member of the Beaver Creek Masonic Lodge No. 335.
He married Miss Nancy Moffett, daughter of Owen and Nancy Gilman Moffett. Mrs. Gibbs died in 1941. A son, Owen Cole Gibbs, is also deceased.
Survivors are a son, J. Rollin Gibbs, Louisville Attorney, two daughters, Mrs. Eloise Ledford, Louisville and Mrs. William P. Perry at home, five grandchildren, Mrs. Billy Berry and James B. Ledford, Lexington, Mrs. Charles Eichman, Rockford, Ill, Mrs. Robert A. Pannier, Arlington, Va. and Mrs. Robert Howells, Atlanta, Ga., and six grandchildren.
