Louisa County, Virginia

Senator, governor, surveyor. Participated in the Yellowstone Expedition in 1819-20, a follow-up survey for Lewis and Clark expedition led by Col. John O'Fallon. Served as Kentucky Secretary of State, 1851; U.S. Senator in 1852 following death of Henry Clay and appointed by President Franklin Pierce as Governor of the New Mexico territory, 1853 - 1857.
